SSP – Single Super Phosphate

SSP is an essential, multi-nutrient fertilizer that provides crops with readily available phosphorus ($\text{P}_2\text{O}_5$), along with two vital secondary nutrients: sulfur (S) and calcium (Ca). It is a cost-effective choice widely used as a basal dose to promote strong root development, enhance crop resistance, and improve overall yield, especially in oilseed and pulse crops.

Description

Single Super Phosphate (SSP) is one of the oldest and most traditional mineral-based fertilizers, known for its foundational role in modern agriculture. It is produced by treating naturally occurring phosphate rock with sulfuric acid, which converts the insoluble phosphate into a form that is readily available for plant uptake (monocalcium phosphate).

Key Nutrient Composition (Typical Analysis):-

SSP is a multi-nutrient fertilizer, supplying three major nutrients in a single product:6

  • Phosphorus (7$\text{P}_2\text{O}_5$): 16% (Minimum 14.5% water-soluble, which is immediately available to plants).8

  • Sulfur (S): 11-12%9

  • Calcium (Ca): ~21%10

Primary Benefits and Uses:-

  1. Promotes Strong Root Development: The readily available phosphorus is crucial for early plant establishment, root growth, and efficient energy transfer (ATP) within the plant.

  2. Sulfur Supplementation: The high sulfur content is essential for oilseed and pulse crops (like soybean, groundnut, rapeseed) as it aids in the synthesis of proteins, enzymes, and oils, thus increasing both yield and product quality.

  3. Soil Health and Structure: The calcium content helps in maintaining good soil structure and is beneficial for acidic soils.

  4. Cost-Effectiveness: It is often the most economical source of phosphorus, sulfur, and calcium compared to other phosphatic fertilizers.

  5. Application: SSP is primarily applied as a basal dose (before or at the time of sowing) and comes in both powdered and granulated forms. It can be easily blended with most other fertilizers (except for Urea and DAP).
